I've been reading various threads about identifying cleaned coins, but I'm unsure about whether a recent ebay purchase is a cleaned coin. My original thought was that it was clearly cleaned, but now I'm reading about planchet lines, and I may be seeing only planchet lines, or signs of both cleaning and planchet lines. Any advice would be appreciated. I took a number of pictures from various angles and lighting, and shared a few here. I concentrated mostly on the obverse, and then subsequently had to use the image adjustment tool to downsize my files, so hopefully they still have enough detail. I think the fields on the obverse show planchet lines, and the right field on the obverse, and the fields on the reverse around "One Dime" show signs of cleaning. Would you agree?

Tough call from these pics. Looks like cleaning but might just be die polishing lines. Could we get some close-ups? to the CCF!

I'm thinking it was cleaned sometime in its lifetime

I tried to get some closer views, but I'm not sure if it is helpful. To be clear about my question, I would like to see if this coin is exhibiting both planchet lines or die polishing as well as cleaning. From the first two pictures I posted, it appears that the field in front of the face on the obverse has scratches from being cleaned, as do the two fields on the reverse around "One Dime". However, some of the vertical lines in front of the face, and behind the head appear different to me. Are those from cleaning? Additional close ups. Lighting and focus is very difficult, so apologies if they aren't good.

The color is off and these are hairline scratches, they do not look like die polish marks to me.

Thanks for mentioning the color. I just looked at it next to a 1916 quarter I got from the same seller. The color on the quarter is consistent and has nice cartwheels, but the dime does not. Good observation.

Agreed they just like harsh cleaning scratches from a brush. The areas that have just a tiny bit of crust/dark matter showing are probably the areas that were missed where the crud still shows. Color seems a bit yellow but I woudn't know why.

To answer your question, yes, I think both. Some of those are clear die polish lines. YOu can tell when the lines end at the devices. When they continue onto the devies, perhaps with a small clear area immedietly next to the device, those are polishing lines. I see what I think are some polishing lines on the cheek. I also see some clear die polish lines on the field.

Thank you all for your input. I am going to contact the seller about returning it. It was certainly not obvious in the picture, and I don't recall any mention of cleaning.

Solid AU and a nice one despite being cleaned. I have the complete series including all the key dates. Again, very nice!

Harsh cleaning with polishing compound...left the abrasion marks.

IMO the scratches in the fields are from die polishing. There may(?) be a hint of a different set of polish lines on the bust. But with the almost total lack of toning I am leaning (heavily) towards it having been dipped.
