I also just wanted to say how addictive this already is but frustrating for me at the same time since I know nothing about what I am doing.
Can you tell me why I'm noticing looking through my pennies that some have a D under the date and others have nothing? (I know this is a stupid question)

D is a mintmark indicating that the coin was stuck in Denver. Philadelphia struck pennies have no mintmark. But yeah, I wonder why it is so as well

Traditionally, coins minted in Philly have not had mint marks and the usage of the P mint mark is a relatively recent occurrence(except for 42-45 silver Jefferson nickels). Some cents have been occasionally minted at West Point(yes, the Army college in upstate New York) as a supplemental supply when Philadelphia was too busy producing other coins. I believe that the Mint did not want to create any mint mark rarities so it chose to leave the mint mark off of Philly coins so it would not need to create a W mint mark as well. West Point primarily mints silver, gold, and platinum bullion coins and the collector versions of those do have the W mint mark. Other mint marks are as follows: S- San Francisco(currently only proof coinage and some commemoratives, last major circulating coinage minted in 1974 with some SBA dollar production in 1979 and 1980) O- New Orleans(closed in 1909) CC- Carson City, NV(closed in 1893) D- Dahlonega, GA(only gold, permanently closed by the Civil War) C- Charlotte, NC(only gold, permanently closed by the Civil War)

They are cents. I hereby regret my mistake before anyone else spots it and points it out

Quote: They are cents. I hereby regret my mistake before anyone else spots it and points it out But you have the "I am not an American" excuse on your side, and for this reason I have let you slide! It must be noted that I do this more in jest than I do as a serious crusade to correct people. It is just one of those things that gets my attention, but does not really bother me. It is like when people say "ATM machine" not being fully cognizant that an ATM is an Automated Teller Machine

Yeah, and by the same ... um ... token, "American" refers to anyone between Point Barrow and Tierra del Fuego. In Spanish, "norteamericano" isn't much more accurate, but just try pronouncing "estadounidense", the correct term, quickly three times in a row! Oh, well, can you imagine what you'd be faced with if someone named, say, "Morganthaler" "discovered" the Americas?

Quote: Yeah, and by the same ... um ... token, "American" refers to anyone between Point Barrow and Tierra del Fuego Very true! You got me! But one would be hard pressed to find an Argentine that would refer to their self as American. Besides, I can easily amend my rules to say that I fully expect anyone in this hemisphere to know that the United States has always issued cents not pence! Therefore, covering all Americans and still excluding our Polish friend!

Brazilian Americans and African Americans......hummmm... ...immigrant or native born ?... .."American" .....hmmmm...... "North American" ? .....Mexican American & Canadian American ? So one could get so confused by technicalities so easily here ! Canadians are Americans then ?... So maybe "we" are really United Statesians .... Unless the "title" only describes what continent your from, but then as pointed out, that makes no sense either. Why are United Statesians the only ones referred to as "Americans" if ALL OF THESE OTHER COUNTRIES ARE "AMERICANS" TOO....? NORTH, CENTRAL, AND SOUTH ! The Americans of Columbia are fine people.... What are the Americans doing in Venezuela these days with Chavez ? Chilean Americans are so Americana aren't they ? This all brings interesting evaluation for me........THANKS ! .....NOW I'm TIRED "AND" I HAVE A HEADACHE !..
