Hi,

I noticed these two £2 coins in my change were slightly different with respect to the "Standing on the ...." motto written around the coin.

When compared to each other, the writing is upside down on the 1999 coin when the face of the coin is upwards..

Excuse my novice knowledge, but is this normal between the years.. or could one of these be fake?

Many Thanks

Hello and

The edge inscription is added to the blanks before the coins are struck. The blanks with the edge inscription are then loaded into hoppers and fed in between the obverse and reverse dies. It is completely random whether the edge inscription is the right way up or upside down in relation to the obverse of the coin.

I also want to add that remember that the centre is a security feature. Tilt the coins and in the right angle you will see a pattern appear in quite a distinct way. Fakes will not light up like that. Unfortunately The Royal Mint decided to rid the £2 of this feature when they changed the design, but this latent image feature exists on the new £1 coin, just under the Queen's head (where a '£' and '1' light up in different angles)

Normal.

The 1999 is quite attractive. Would not mind having one.
