I received some "gold" dollars from gas station. They were the Saqageua Dollars. In them was a 1979 SBA that was actually "Gold" color and rim. I've never seen these before. Is there any value to these? I'm sure it's probly a plating like the Saqs.

No US coin has ever been plated from the mint except:

* 1943 steel cents were zinc plated steel, plated BEFORE the blanks were punched out (so if you look carefully there should be a thin line of unplated steel on the edge)

* 1982 (mid year) and later Lincoln cents are copper plated zinc.

EVERY other plated coin is post mint damaged by some outside party. Ranging from school science experiments to people trying to create fabulous collectables.

The "Golden Dollars", along with all of the clad coinage (Dime, Quarter, Half, Ike and SBA Dollars) are made of a metal sandwich, mechanically bonded together...

Quote:
The alloy composition for the Sacagawea dollar was unveiled Oct. 6,1999, in New York City. Although golden in color, it contains no gold. Both the golden Sacagawea dollar and silver-colored Anthony dollars are clad coins, sharing a three-layer composite construction, with a pure copper core sandwiched between and metallurgically bonded to outer layers of alloy material.

The alloy layers on each side of the pure copper core of the Anthony dollar is copper-nickel, a material composed of 75 percent copper and 25 percent nickel, the same alloy that comprises the Jefferson 5-cent coin. With the Sacagawea dollar, the alloy layers on each side of the copper core are manganese bronze, a golden-colored alloy composed of 77 percent copper, 12 percent zinc, 7 percent manganese and 4 percent nickel.

Most of the time, clad coins are quoted as the net %, e.g. 40% silver dollars and halves.

SBA dollars are clad, not plated. If it has a gold appearance it was plated post-mint.

Well it didn't appear to have any signs of steel on rim. But, I'm also not a trained eye either. Still trying too learn a lot from here. I will take some photos and apply it here to a comment. So why exactly would people do this ? To try and trick people ? Or was this a novelty thing from somewhere ? Is it at least with the $1 ?!!?!

Ok here's some photos of Obverse and Rim of the coin. Can anyone tell me why someone would gold plate a SBA? Does this effect the $1 value of the coin? Thanks !
