The letter D is a mintmark - your coin is from Denver

the D means it was minted in Denver, S means San Fransisco, and no letter at all means it was minted in Philadelphia

On this site you have the mintage facts. 1938D has 5,3 million. 1941 has over 200. I'd say it's not that bad after all.

Someone will post the current value of it, but I'd be better if you told us what condition the coin is in.

I just bought a ton of these the other day. For well circulated examples I paid ~35 cents. I bought a total of 12 with the best example being a VF coin and the worst being a VG. Better examples are worth more.

Unfortunately the coin you specify is at the least $0.50 and the most $5.00
