Hello,
although I am not new, it has been quite some time since I have been on here. I have been in and out of collecting for about 8 years now. With Christmas around the corner, I have asked my wife for some new supplies so that I can jump back in. Here is ny question:
How do you as a collector stay interested in the hobby when life gets busy or things seem to be slow? I mostly have dealt with small cents but am looking to dive into silver as well. I love collecting, trading and selling but have just found myself to be incosistent with staying active. Looking forward to your feedback and ideas.

However you want really. Its something that should be fun and enjoyable, but if you feel like you have to force it at some point that's not how it should be. Pocket change or whatever can be fun for some people others it's not. There's no right or wrong answer and if life gets in the way and you leave it for a while that's fine too. Enjoyment is the key, if you have to force it that's a job lol.

You could try joining a local coin club or attend a coin show. I've been collecting for 27 years, but I took breaks over that time. Life can get busy sometimes and coin collecting gets put on the back burner. I find attending coin club meetings, subscribing to coin news and being a member of a national coin organization helps to keep my interest. Oh yeah, and frequenting the CCF!

Not a direct answer to your question, but I would echo what Basebal21 says. Life can get in the way, or other interests may take priority, and you leave it for awhile. My personal experience is that I collected coins from about 12-18 years old. Then they sat on a shelf for 25 years with no activity. I don't think I ever lost the interest, but other things took priority. Then I collected actively for about 3 years, and again other priorities arose for about 6 years. Now I'm actively engaged again. I've never lost interest. I may shelve it again in the near future, who knows. However, I don't suspect I'll ever lose interest. I don't actually regret the periods of inactivity, when you return, it makes it feel fresh again.

Have you tried roll searching? I look through about 5 rolls of cents almost everyday. John1

Nothing wrong with taking breaks from collecting. I took a break for 15 plus years. I might start another break soon.

I have struggled with the same things over the years. Although no year went without at least purchasing the annual sets from the mint. Myself, I tend to put somewhere around ten percent of what I make working towards acquiring coins I do not yet have. In other words, keeping things realistic as a working-class collector. In time it pays off since I can say that I have every denomination by date and mint mark back to 1932. So my advice would be to keep chugging along.

I am quite active in metal detecting, consistently every year since about 2009. I use a quality higher end detector and have built quite a collection of over 300 silver coins including Morgan and Peace dollars. Many late 1800's silvers, large cents, Indians and almost every type of coin minted since 1870. It's the thrill of the hunt that keeps me interested, I'll probably be hooked for life.
