Picked up a solid VF 1894 3 Kopek coin for 99 cents but have little info on it as my Krause catalog starts with 20th century coins.

Can anyone give me a little more info? I'm assuming the catalog number is Y#11.2 but this is as little as I know. Any help would be appreciated.

The difference between KM/Y# 11.1 and 11.2 is the mintmark; 11.1 is Ekaterinberg mint, which ceased making 3 kopeks in 1876, so yes, 11.2 is your only option.

1894 isn't a particularly scarce date; Mintage: 4.8 million. In fact, only 1870 and 1871 are notably scarcer than the other years for this series (which began in 1867). CV (4th ed. 2004) $1.50 in VF. Prices for Russian coins have risen in recent years with resurgent interest in memorabilia of the old Empire.

Thanks Sap,

I assumed it had a high mintage due the price so I'm not too shocked. I bought this as a type coin for a family lineage type set I'm working on.

Currently I'm working on my 4th generation who lived in Poland from 1887-1908 which at that time used Russian coinage. Since I'm working on my 4th (followed by the 5th) generations I really need to pick up a 19th century guide.

Thanks Again,
Ken
