This is an odd one. I was at an auction of 500 coins on Sunday, and I had a spreadsheet with coins I was interested in. I attended the auction, and previewed this coin and I thought, "this is not natural", and I asked the person next to me what he thought, and he thought the same. So, I put an X next to that item, so as not to bid on it. I bid on probably 25 coins and won 9. When I checked out, they showed me the coins, and this one showed up. I thought, what the *heck*. It turns out, I put the X in the wrong row of my spreadsheet.

So, I had buyers remorse on this coin, but was quite happy with my 1804 Draped Bust. Now that the coins are out of their holders, I'm the opposite (though really different scales of rarity). Funny how life works. I would have much preferred it the other way around, in case there is any confusion about that.

I'm seeing an AU 55, though I thought AU58 obverse and Unc reverse when I bid.

The reverse has a very uniform toning that matches what you see around "States of America"

The obvers has a very uniform, but different toning which can be seen on the head/face.

Looks natural to me, the surface effect is close to what's on the proof 1894 I owned.

Very well preserved AU58, wouldn't surprise me if it slid into a 63 TPG holder these days. Really quite a beautiful coin.

@Paralyse The coin is really growing on me. I'm really liking the color/toning.

I don't know about you, but I find the Barber obverse very hard to grade. I've been looking for some nicer samples in all denominations, and I just find it difficult. I think it is the leaves around the head that are difficult for me. They just aren't that sharp to begin with, so its hard to detect wear.

I knocked this out in PS real quick. The white circles show areas that are "high points" and likeliest to show wear.

Closing the loop on this as well. It came back UNC- Details Cleaned. I wonder if the odd toning is the diagnostic for cleaning, or if there is something else? Also, I'm a bit surprised that it came back UNC, given that the reverse seems to show some wear. These Truview pics really show everything don't they?

I welcome other's opinions.

Interesting. No evidence of cleaning at all even under close-up surface views? No hairlines, nothing?

The color is the tell, I suppose. Must agree it doesn't look quite right.

I see a few faint hairlines behind the head. However, I feel this is market acceptable and should be resubmitted NGC
