The coat of arms of the Duchy of Lorraine has shown up in this thread before, and for good reasons, it is an impressive collection of ducal lineage. On this 1632 teston from Lorraine, there are no less than nine elements in the shield. Only two of them - Lorraine, the center shield, and Bar, the fishes down to the right - represent regions under actual control of the duke, Charles IV. The rest come by a mix of inheritance and a bit of wishful thinking, some rather dubious like the claim on Jerusalem (the cross). But it makes a nice and impressive coat of arms, nonetheless.




I find it interesting to compare the coat of arms of Lorraine with that of the neighboring and very much larger and more powerful kingdom of France. Just three fleur-de-lys, like on this Louis XIV 1/12 ecu from 1660. No need to brag about splendid lineage, everyone knew the might of the French king anyway. (And as shown by NumisRob above, still in use well into the 19th century.)
