Aside from collecting regular issue U.S. coins I occasionally break off and buy private mint "Coins" which commemorate the 100, 200 and so forth anniversary date of historical places, people and events. Such as the 400th anniversary of Jamestown which I picked up that year at the visitor center. Anyhow, where else can one find such commemoratives? I don't quite seem to find them on ebay nor have I seen many, if any, at dealers or shows. Any suggestions? Last, is there one specific mint which strikes them? If so, a direct contact might pan out.

All four mints strike commemorative coins. Not all of them strike every one of them though.

The term I think you might be searching for is medals. These can be struck by the U.S. Mint or private mints. Through the years there have been plenty issued for a variety of subjects.

For example on ebay type "Jamestown medal" in the search box and I got 46 listings.

The name when that often comes up with commemorative medals is the Franklin Mint however there are/were other companies that struck and sold their versions.

Thanks guys. I thought as much, multiple private mints. Just wasn't quite sure when dealing with the National Park service releases found inside the visitor's centers. I simply assumed the government had a contract with one in particular.

As mentioned by MeadowviewCollector, there are many hundreds of commemorative medals available in the marketplace, almost all struck by private mints. There are dozens added to ebay everyday, it's just a matter of using the best keywords in your searches or being diligent going through the new listings of medals each day (or every few days).

Many of the non-precious metal versions (i.e., brass, bronze, nickel, etc.) trade for fairly low prices in the secondary market and that can sometimes make them difficult to locate at shows. Why? Dealers want to maximize their sales total at a show and will focus on higher-end material at their table.

That said, at every show I have ever attended I have encountered at least a few dealers that have lots of coins in binders. These binders enable the dealers to offer a large quantity of lower-value material in a compact space. Often these dealers also have one or two binders labelled "Tokens" or "Medals." I have found many nice commemorative medals in such binders - they are often worth spending a few minutes flipping through their pages.

Good luck with your search!

Thank you Commems for your tip about the tokens/medals book. I'm going to my first coin show next month and will keep my eye out.
