I've recently come across a 1917 Steel Wheat penny. Yet, I thought that steel pennies were only printed in WWII? Is this a real coin, and if so is it worth anything? Thanks.

Please show pics of both sides in true color - this shows us very little, other than a well-worn example. Plated, perhaps?

I am extremely new to numismatics. Therefore, what do you mean by true color? Thank you Also, why would a coin be plated, what purpose does this have?

Probably plated - commonly done as a science experiment.

I agree that it looks to be a plated cent. As to why, who knows? Sometimes it is done for expiremental purposes only, or it may be done for commercial purposes or commemorative purposes.

"True color" means what it looks like in person. In pics, several image processing functions can make something appear to be a different color than it is, especially in low light situations. Primarily, this is White Balance (or Temperature). In this case, you say the coin looks like a steel cent, but the pics make it look a bit more golden than that.

In the end, it is impossible for a 1917 cent to be struck (not printed) on a steel planchet.

I don't see plating. Just acid treatment

Possibly just very overdone cleaning. However, if plated this is done in school labs all the time for fun. Easiest thing available for such experiments.
