Information On The 'Island Creek Stores Company' ?

They supplied mining outfits and their employees with goods. Only known information I have is they supplied 'Island Creek Coal Company' in West Virginia, and 'Arctic Coal Company' in Norway in the early 1900's. Island Creek Stores Company used metal tokens in W. Virginia, and paper chits in Norway. Report this Post to the Staff

If you google 'Island Creek Coal Company' in West Virginia, you will come up with lots of info. Whether it was the mining company, lumber company, saw mill, Sugar mills or RR they are pretty much the same. pay them in script so they have to shop at the company store and if they need money the value of the script in exchange was discounted to discourage going elsewhere. If there were non employees living in a company town the stores would also accept cash.
