Can anyone please explain the 4 stamped on this coin? Does it mean that a penny of it has been used? I can't really find it online because I don't know how to word it. Thanks - ChristinaCoins

It's called a counterstamp . Made by someone outside of the mint for any number of reasons . Coin would have some value to a counterstamp collector .

Not a bad piece considering a nickel was the work-horse coinage of the time. Do you have others in the series? Love to see them.

Nickel is a most hardened metal. As such, it serves as good measure for a test punch, as Conder surmised. I've seen the number stamps on a great many coins before, but their purpose, likely industrial and stamped by a machinist, is unknown. As such, they are "mavericks" that will never be attributed.
