Fun project. Can I ask where one gets bags of wheat pennies like yours?

I acquired these around 2010 as part of some collections I was buying off
ebay. I'm not sure how you would acquire them now. I will definitely say that it will not be from a source that is interested in, or educated about coins.
I happened upon a seller that was selling large lots of coins that had silver and other types of US and foreign coins in his lots. He claimed that he was liquidating his uncle's estate, though I have reasons to question that. The listings were really poorly described, and the pictures were terrible. All the things that you would steer away from. But I took a chance and won a couple of auctions that I was very happy with. I subscribed to him and ended up purchasing the bulk of his listings. I think I was at the right place at the right time, but also took a bit of a risk initially.
I think those deals are still out there though. Recently, I attended my first two live auctions at a local establishment. Both auctions had a number of old German States coins, where the bidders were bidding silver spot for everything. I cherry picked the stuff I wanted very cheaply. If I had known more about the coins, I would have cherry picked even more. Anyway, this auction house does not specialize in coins. The next two auctions they had, bumpkus as far as coins are concerned.
I then attended a coin-specific auction where the auction house had some knowledge of coins, and so to its clientele. I was still able to get a couple of good deals (and a couple of poor choices), but it was a lot harder.
That's probably not the specific answer you were looking for, but that's my view of it.
