I was looking at a 1988 proof set that I got for my girlfriend the other night ( checking for the DDO half, which wasn't there :( )BUT...we did notice that the mintmarks on the cent and the half were different than the mintmarks on the other 3 coins, the difference is slight, but much more noticeable than say the 1981 type 1 and 2. I was wondering if anyone out there knows anything about this, or has noticed 2 different S's on their 1988 proofs

I can't say that I have looked at my 1988 proof sets in a while. I will look at my three sets to see if I notice any difference in the s's and let you know by weeks end.

Beginning in 1985 the S mintmark was on the models that were reduced down to create the master hubs. Since the S was modeled onto each coin design individually and not created by the same punch on each die, it is possible for there to be slight differences in the S on each coin in the set. However the mintmark will be the same on every coin of each denomination. (All the cents will be the same, all the five cents will be the same etc.)

Conder101's expanation makes logical sense and enough so that I will not pull out my proof sets at this time. I will however make a note and when I do pull out the sets I will look for the differences in the S's.

TOZ that was good observation on your part to pick-up on the differences I can't say that I would have looked for something like that.
