Welcome to the forum.
2p coins of that date were only ever issued in bronze for circulation. I am intrigued. Please post pics.

What is the weight of your coin and what diameter is the coin? If you do think it is an error, you can contact The Royal Mint Museum. http://www.royalmintmuseum.org.uk/about-us/faqsI have what appears to be a mis-strike or error piece. Can you explain what has happened? The Museum is able to offer an explanation for any apparent mis-strikes or error pieces that have been produced at The Royal Mint. If you would like to submit such a piece for examination, please send it to Dr Kevin Clancy, Director of the Museum, at the address given on the contact us page. There is a £20 charge for this service and the piece, which will not be damaged in any way, will be returned to you in due course with a report of our findings.

There is a small dark area on the obverse between the edge rim and the dots at the start of the date. Could somebody more expert than me have a look at it? Is it a coating coming off or imperfectly applied, or is it something else?

Looks plated. Just above the 1 in the date as Anaximander pointed out, you can see where it is starting to peel off.

Yep, it's plated. The plating is coming off (or was never applied) above the first "1" in the date on the obverse, and around the letter N in "PENCE" on the reverse.
When an object such as a coin is electroplated, the electrode wires have to be attached to the coin somewhere - and those attachment points are usually either unplated or the plating is weaker there.
I have a zinc-plated Australian 2 cent piece that my father electroplated, as part of a chemistry demonstration. It's got two "holes" in the plating where the wires went.
