I understand your dilemma now. Also, please don't take what I said as being negative toward you in any way. For a first purchase, it was one of the better ones I've seen, and in the long run it will pay itself back in enjoyment and knowledge, even if the price of silver never goes up. You should be glad that you are starting when you are young(er), and that you have the desire to learn everything that you can.

I've picked out three listings of low end Buy It Now Morgans that caught my eye. Look them over when you get a chance and tell me what you think of each one. If you had to choose between these coins/sellers which would you pick and why?

Thank you for all of the help. I definitely will do. Is there any way to send like a P.M. on coin community? I have not quite familiarized myself with the site features yet.

Coin # 1 http://cgi.ebay.com/1879S-Morgan-Si...cmdZViewItem

Obverse- The first noticeable thing that I see is that the hair and the rim is almost completely worn down. That considered, the lettering is still readable and the word "Liberty" is still well defined. The last thing noticeable is that the non-raised areas are mostly scratch free.
Reverse- The most prominent thing that I notice is that the eagle's wings are both severely worn especially near the top. The chest is also very worn. The rim is in better shape than the obverse but is still very well worn. Wreath is worn and the word united is almost un-readable.

Coin # 2 http://cgi.ebay.com/1899-S-MORGAN-S...cmdZViewItem

Obverse- The most noticeable thing is that the coin appears to be artificially toned (don't know official term). Hair is more detailed than first coin but still lacks a lot of detail. Rim is in nice shape. All lettering is well defined including "Liberty". There are many scratches.
Reverse- The wings definitely have less wear than first but wear is still visible. There are two or three dings (dents) in the rim. Eagle chest is worn. This side also appears to be artificially toned. Tail feathers last most if not all detail. Wreath is worn. Lettering is pretty well defined.

Coin # 3 http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-5...AR_W0QQitemZ a href= https://www.coincommunity.com/go/link.asp?target=https://www.ebay.com/itm/-/160265701830 target= _blank rel= nofollow 160265701830 /a QQihZ006QQcategoryZ39465QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Obverse- Oh wow. Umm. this is very hard to tell. It appears to be in good shape, at a glance. With the small images, it's next to impossible to see specific details. When blown up in photoshop the picture is so pixelated detail can't be seen. When you squint the coin looks to be roughly the same quality as coin # 1.
Reverse- Again, this coin is very hard to see. When I look at the left side, the whole thing looks to be a blur. It appears to me like the lower left wing is almost completely worn off. But again, I cannot be 100% certain.

If I had to chose. I wouldn't chose the third seller. Even with a 97.4% feedback, I don't usually buy from sellers with negative feedback. I wouldn't buy the coin either because of bad picture quality.

Between the first and the second sellers, I think that I would pick the second. Even though the coin is artificially toned (I think), It has much better detail quality than the first coin. The seller has good feedback as well with no negatives and no neutrals.

Re: PMs. Just click on the user you want to email and click to send an email.

Very good analysis--you picked out a lot of the things I was thinking. How about price? Do you have a current price guide that you refer to? Did you look at the "seller's other items"? If they combine shipping and have other items you might like, you can whittle down your per item cost. What about return policies? Also, as you know, feedback percentage can be deceiving. I purchased an item with no problems from a seller with few sales and a single negative from an unreasonable buyer (for a non-coin item, no less) that brought the seller's rating down considerably, and apparently caused others to shy away from bidding/buying. Likewise a seller with hundreds of sales and a 99.1% positive can be a red flag.

One note: most often bad pictures are a curse, but sometimes they can be a blessing. Sellers who take bad pictures are sometimes just bad photographers, and if they don't know coins a purchase might be worth the gamble. Not too long ago I bought a lot of silver quarters for just under silver melt price, but most of them were dated before 1940. You could only tell from the tiny pictures that they were probably better dates only if you had a sense of the difference between the look of a 30's Washington quarter and a 40's Washington quarter. If a seller doesn't know where the mintmark is located, you could get a better coin than you thought you were going to at a reasonable price. But I generally stay away from that move unless it carries minimal risk.

I do have a current price guide. It's a 2009 Red Book. The pricing is pretty accurate imo. I did not read the return policies. As far as feedback, if I was making a not hypothetical purchase I would try to go back and actually look at the negative feed back because like you said, people can leave negative feedback for unreasonable things. Thanks again for all of the help, hopefully next time I will look more in depth at the coin itself along with the policies of the seller.

BTW: I wasn't considering your words as negative towards me but rather constructive criticism so that I can make a more informed purchases in the future.

That's great, I think you're getting on top of it, now I suggest you look at a lot of coins and learn grading and detecting alterations as best as you can. Take advantage of the free memberships at Teletrade and Heritage and look at (a lot of) completed auctions of certified coins to get a feel for how the grading companies tend to grade. They may not always be right, but you'll get an idea of how to be in the ballpark with your own grading. And if you find a coin you are interested in, post the picture in the grading forum to get other opinions.
