Ciao, what do you think of this 5 Cents 1914? I submitted to PCGS but they didn't recognize the variant 1914/3. If is not a 3 under the 4, what is it? The number doesn't appear normal to me. Thanks, Roberto

Not seeing a 3 under the 4,but I don't know what is there. Give it a bit and a pro will chime in. John1

The tip of the 3 is to the right edge of the top of the 4. There are 10 different die sets in 1914 with the over date. Only two that use to get slabbed by PCGS and NGC were die pairs #1 and #2. Yours appears to be die pair #6. I went through what you did with my die pair #3 coin. I even had Buffalo experts Ron Pope and Bill Fivaz look at it before submitting and confirmed it was an over date. When it came back MS-64 regular 1914 I sold it to a specialist for 1/10 what a die 1 or 2 would bring. I found out later that SEGS will slab and ID all die varieties of the 1914/3 over date. Here are photos of the date area of Die #1 and #2 (from Ron Pope's book Buffalo nickels - The Abraded Die Varieties). The die polish lines above the date are what PCGS is looking for. Die pair #1 Die pair #2

IGE, thanks! I still learn something new, each time I come here.

I don't believe the TGP's recognize the 4/3 anymore. The OP coin looks like it took a hit to the top point of the 4 which is why it looks odd.

The OP coin matches the die #6 photo above (middle photo).

I have never seen PCGS certify one. I don't remember NGC certifying one either. I have only seen SEGS grade them.

Here's the 2016-18 auction records for PCGS/NGC/ANACS slabbed 1914/3 Buffalos. https://www.PCGS.com/auctionprices/...ate-ms/93924Prices range from $235-$18,213. In 2002 an PCGS MS-65 set a record price of $63,250 in a Heritage auction. This info is from PCGS.

Thanks for explanations, very interesting. In fact my coins looks as the #6. I will try to send it to SEGS to get it certified by them, but as I am in Italy I don't' think will be so easy. PCGS and NGC have their European offices that collect coins to certify, not SEGS.
