I wouldn't pay much more than scrap for either the '39 or '49. Each has .6 troy oz of silver.

That seems a bit harsh for a coin as attractive as this.

May seem harsh but it`s true.
Quite a common find in dealer`s melt value buckets.

From the small pictures shown, this raw 1939 coin shows rim dings,
black toning, circulation scratches, and wear. The mintage was 1.363
million. If it was a double HP or triple HP variety, it may be worth
more than melt. I would not pay more than $13 for a 1939 dollar in
that shape. I agree with DBM and Okie, a very common coin found in
melt buckets. There are nicer graded 1939 coins out there for cheap.

Sorry that one is a hole filler, until you upgrade to a nicer 1939.

Lots of nice coins end up in dealers melt box. Can I get a grade on this one?

There's some slight wear in the hair eyebrow, so 55-58. As with the '39 and '49, these silver dollars were either the first year of issue or commem, so thousands and thousands were put away in drawers, boxes and jars. They saw little circulation and supply of AU+ and BU's far exceeds demand. Shop around for one uncleaned with even patina .. they are about. With silver at $15.66 US, scrap is worth around $10 US or $13.33 Cdn The '35 is worth more than scrap and the '49 minimally more, but neither close to $20 US. Regardless, they are nice looking coins to hold onto .. small mintages compared to US coins..
