I recently purchased some 5 cent and 10 cent tokens with the inscription J J Russell. (see attached image). I am trying to find out where they came from and their age. The seller said they came from northern Michigan and they might have come from a ship, but did not have any additional info. I would like to find out the company that issued them, its location as well as the age of the tokens. Would appreciate any input on these.

Nothing Listed in either token catalog, Michigan tokens book by Cunningham, Or in a couple of great lakes freighters sites and google. That style has been generally from a saloon, bar, or lunch counter type establishment. That doesn't mean that it can't be from a ship. But it is highly unlikely Since the company store tokens usually have the full title of the firm on their tokens If you were told the area they came from, that might help Northern Michigan covers a lot of area not to mention a large number of ports from lumbering times to now. They would be pre 1960's merchant tokens From my experience.

Thanks for the responses to date. I have to agree with Circus, looking at many other similar tokens they do appear to be related to bars, taverns, lunch type or like places. Am just curious as to what and where the company was. I was told they came from northern MI; that could mean that is where they were acquired, not necessarily where the business was located. Like looking for a needle in a haystack, but so far cant come up with anything related to JJ Russell. Will keep inquiring; someone must know.

Thanks John1. Initially, I was going to do that but didn't see any contact info. I eventually did find an email address and am waiting for a response to see if they can provide any info.

They aren't listed in the token catalog for the state of Michigan. If you yake seperate pictures of them and send them in they will add them to the catalog under Michigan

Circus - At this point I cannot verify that they are Michigan tokens, so I will take a wait and see before doing that.

I received a response from Paul Cunningham of Cunningham Exonumia saying they were produced by Meyer-Wenthe of Chicago, probably between about 1900 to 1915, but had no other details about them. Will keep looking and asking.
