A dear friend of mine asked me to find out about a coin she has had for some time. Easily discovered is that it is an 1899 Nicholas the Second Rouble.

The coin weighs 19.97 grams and measures approx 34mm. This marries up with the published weights allowing for the fact it is worn.

The trouble is when looking up the coin I see multiple varieties and I cannot see any *s, nor do I know where to look.

These aren't the greatest photo's, but I managed to get a close up of the edge marking which seems to indicate it is the variety with no mintage figure.

Varieties include
1899 ** 10,000,000 KM#59.1; Brussels Mint
1899 #1060;#1047; Y#59.3; St. Petersburg
1899 #1069;#1041; 6,502,674 Y#59.3; St. Petersburg

Any opinions on condition or rarity welcome ^^ possible speculation on value is welcome too - it is surely worth more than the silver content?

You can find a number of these (specifically with that chi-3 mark) that have sold recently if you do an ebay sold items search on Russia rouble 1899.

I saw selling prices of $23, $30 and $45 for examples with a fair amount of wear.

CoinArchives was less helpful. At the December Niemczyk auction, there were two lots that hammered at about $90, each of which contained an 1899 in VF+ in a lot of two 1 rouble coins, but the marks for the 1899 were not indicated (so, an average of $45 per coin).

To me it suggests a value in the $30-50 range unless I am missing something, or mis-estimating the condition of the one you've shown compared tot he recent sales.

Thanks, I guessed around that figure given there are some for sale on ebay just above that.

Well at least she knows what she has now.
