hvedo, I think most fakes are made in China and Europe. But we should not assume foreign dealers regularly sell fakes. Some European auction houses have been around a long time. Spink in London started in the year 1666! One of the biggest fake antiquities dealers lives in New York. A recent fake ancient coins seller on ebay is from New Jersey. He has changed his store name several times and keeps selling the same garbage using the same photos.

Vcoins started in 1998. I have purchased coins there with no problems. If you think a fraudster is selling fakes on Vcoins don't buy from that seller and report them to the Vcoins administrator.

No dealer is perfect. Some years ago I got a bronze coin from a CNG auction. When it arrived I looked at it with a magnifier. The coin had been altered to improve the condition. Pits in the field had been filled in with soft colored putty. I'd never seen that before. I got a full refund. CNG is a great company. No doubt the coin was enhanced before CNG got it. By the way, CNG has an office in London making them a foreign dealer.

I actually prefer buying coins from USA sellers. Not due to fakes but because of lower shipping fees and no exchange rates. Still, I have no issues buying from Europe if it's a coin I want at a fair price. There are growing concerns about import restrictions.

Bottom line, collectors need to be careful. Learn who the honest experienced sellers are who offer returns.

Hi Livingwater

I agree with what you said but on VCoins it used to be reliable and minitored but nowdays they are way more lenient to accept unknown and untrustworthy dealers there and that is not just what I think there are others who also think the same way you can check this thread.

by the way the code of ethics that VCoins has is no use because some of the fakes are really good fakes that can not be spotted by average collectors and dealers. If you end up buying one of those dangerous fakes you will most likely will keep it as genuine and never can prove its fake although in reality it is a fake. so dont count much on the gaurantee they give on VCoins. The only way you will know with higher confidence is by XRF and send to david sear. not even NGC, as I have seen numerous fakes slabbed by NGC. and less than 10% collectors ever bother XRF or sending to david sear for authentication.

Hi hvedo,

My local coin shop has an XRF. He checks every Morgan silver dollar I buy from him. He also freely checked some of my ancient silver coins, Athens tetradrachm, Roman denarii.

It is not WHERE you buy, ebay, vcoins, etc., but WHO you buy from that is important. Buying from reputable dealers is the first line of defense against fakes.

I collect mostly Roman Provincials and Late Roman Bronzes. Some are expensive, but most are $25 to $100 in value. They are not worth the cost of sending to David Sear or anyone else for verification. I do not buy slabbed/graded ancient coins. I don't want them. I like to hold my ancient coins in my hand. There may well be a few fakes in my collection. I don't worry about it.
