This unique skiing first prize medal is not dated but was issued in 1934. This silver plated bronze medal was awarded to the first place winner of the Watzmann mountain downhill skiing competition just outside of Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps. The medal is an impressive 45.5mm in diameter and weighs 28.9grams with a plain edge. The obverse shows a skier racing down hill between two small flags. The reverse has the engraved inscription "Watzmann-Abf. (abfahrt) SA u.(and) SS Kl. (Class) 1 Pr. (1st prize) all within an oak wreath. The medal is not named but could possibly be discovered in local newspapers of that time if any could be found.

Near Berchtestgaden? SA und SS? Sturmabteilung und Schutzstaffel? Some sort of internal Nazi competition?

Yes Arkie, the Watzmann mountain is not within Berchtesgaden but so close (walking distance) that it is in nearly every photo of the town. You are correct about the SS & SA; I was just teasing any potential censers. The competition was open to the public too but it did have a special class for the SA &SS. This medal was for first place in that class and it may have been to a local because I bought the medal in Berchtesgaden in 2005.

I know there are words the site doesn't like, but I don't think direct references to past evil regimes is a problem here.

True Arkie, I must have been in a Facebook mind set when I wrote that.
