It looks like a Greek Tetradrachm, it might be a copy, but I can't be certain. Here is a similar Roman one with Emperor Elagabalus

The emperor on the front is Nero (54-68 AD).

Maybe RPC 4189? (link -- http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/ric/...RPC_4189.jpg )

Nero AR Tetradrachm of Antioch Mint.
OBV. NERWN KAISAR SEBASTOS, laureate bust right, wearing aegis
REV. ETOYS BIP.I, eagle standing right on thunderbolt, wings spread, palm to right.

Martin,

Without putting you on the spot too much(), could you elaborate for myself and others? What "signs" are you referring to that bring you to that conclusion. I'm not looking for a comprehensive list, just a 1-2-3 type thing.

Thank you.

The details are "soft" by which I mean that they are no longer as sharp as they would be on the original. This is due to the casting process. The surfaces look slightly porous i.e. there are small holes formed from bubbles created in the casting process evident on them.
That's what I can see from the images.
It would be interesting to have the coin in hand to have a close look at the edges to see if they show evidence of filing (to eliminate a casting seam).
The weight would also be of use.
Regards,
Martin
