I have this 1976 S Bicentennial silver uncirculated Eisenhower dollar that came in a set that my grandfather gave me when they came out. My dilemma is this, there is a split in the serif on the upper vertical on the letter B. It is not the plastic that it is contained in as I moved the coin around in the plastic to make sure it was not a shadow. There is definitely a split. The set is not terribly expensive to begin with so do I remove it from the original packaging to better examine the rest of this coin?

I would leave it alone since it was a gift.

Thanks John1, that's part of the dilemma too. I know what my Grandpa would say, "You do vhat you vant, I vould because you never know vhat you got until you do". He was born in Yugoslavia in 1897 and had a very thick accent! But, it's still a dilemma for me. He collected too but he didn't collect errors and varieties.

Keep in mind that there were many Working Hub Doubling for that year as well, which does not add any premium to the coin.Yours is most likely one of those. You should be able to look it up on Wexler's site.

Chase, I did read on Wexler's site and all I could find in the mentioned reading was about the 1971 DDO's. There was no mention for 1976 S uncirculated silver Ike's. There isn't even a listing for WDDO's for the year 1976. CONECA's Master list does mention one for the 1976 S DDO using the ODV-008 obverse, which this one has. But, if I am reading correctly only in the proof version.

I decided to throw caution to the wind and I know my Grandpa would've approved. I removed it from its original packaging and found that the bottom right leg of the R also has a slight split that would never have been seen if I had not removed it. It is now safely in a 2x2.

Jim, that little notch on the "E" is a sure sign of a minor Doubled Die! It could be a new listing, if you can't match it.

There is a notch at the top of B as well. There is nothing on any site so I may send this to Mr. Wexler.

I'm so glad you approve jbuck!! I know some would not approve of removing a coin from mint packaging. I guess because I knew my Grandpa would approve made it easier to do.
