Can anyone tell me how to tell the difference between a narrow and wide date on the 1941/42 fifty cent coin.

The last digit is quite close to the hoof on the wide dates.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

Also the distance between the '9' and '4' is smaller and between the '4' and the '1/2' is likewise smaller for the narrow dates..For the wide date the distance between the '9' and '4' and '1/2' s In the wide date are greater and so DBM's comment above holds true.

Here's an example, giving me an opportunity to practise my photo skills.

Narrow Date (the closer number spacing causes a wider gap between the "1" and the hoof). Also "4" is flared.

Wide Date (causing a smaller gap between the "1" and hoof) - Straight "4".
