The obverse of the 1920 Pilgrim Tercentenary half dollar features a left-facing portrait of William Bradford - one of the signers of the Mayflower Compact and a governor of the Plymouth Colony multiple times between 1621 and 1656; he served five nonconsecutive terms for a total of approximately 31 years in office. He is depicted with a mustache and beard on the coin. Did he have such in real life? It is difficult to say as there are no known paintings/engravings of William Bradford that date to circa 1620. So, his depiction on the coin and in paintings/engravings/sculptures made later in the 18th and 19th centuries have to be considered conceptual and somewhat subject to the "vision" of the artist involved. It would be fair to say, however, that a mustache and trimmed beard (as shown on the coin) was a common sight among the men who lived and worked in the Plymouth colony during Bradford's time. So, it wouldn't have been a huge stretch for Cyrus E. Dallin, the coin's designer, to envision Bradford to have such as well. 1920 Pilgrim Tercentenary Half Dollar[ I've posted about the Pilgrim Tercentenary coins multiple times, you can read the posts here: - 1920 Pilgrim Tercentenary- 1921 Pilgrim Tercentenary- 1920 & 1921 Pilgrim Tercentenary - Redux- 1920 Pilgrim Tercentenary Newspaper AdsFor more of my posts about commemorative coins and medals, see: Read More: Commems Collection.

Quote: Panama 1940 2 1/2 Cent. That reminds me... 1904 Panama 50 Centesimos The coin was struck by the US Mint in Philadelphia ( no mint mark) on a 0.900 fine silver planchet with a weight of 25.0 grams and a diameter of 38.1 mm. Its diameter is the same as a US Morgan silver dollar, but its weight is slightly less (25.0 grams vs. 26.73 grams total weight), and its actual silver weight (ASW) is also lower (0.7234 troy ounces vs. 0.7734 troy ounces for a Morgan silver dollar). A left-facing portrait of a bearded Vasco Núñez de Balboa is seen on the coin's obverse. Balboa was a Spanish explorer and conquistador. In 1513, he was the first European to cross the isthmus of Panama and reach the Pacific Ocean; of course, his expedition party experienced everything that Balboa did and at the same time. The coin's reverse features the Coat-of-Arms of Panama. There are seven stars seen above the Arms on the reverse, they are representative of the seven provinces of Panama circa 1904; they were Bocas del Toro, Chiriquí, Cocle, Colón, Los Santos, Panamá and Veraguas. In 2021, Panama is officially comprised of ten provinces (Bocas del Toro, Chiriquí, Cocle, Colón, Darien, Herrera, Los Santos, Panamá, Panamá Oeste and Veraguas) and three indigenous peoples regions, termed comarcas indígenas, (Emberá, Guna Yala and Ngäbe-Bugle) that are considered to be at the province level. Other indigenous regions in the country are not presently considered to be at the full province level.
