I recently acquired this coin as part of a very mixed lot of coins and medallions, unaware of any potential value of this piece until I went through the lot. Ancient coins are not my area, but the rarity and high value alone of this coin leave me suspect - but would be very interested to get opinions of people who know more on ancients

3.35 grams

Thanks!

A 'wannabe' emperor from North Africa in AD68, during the time of Galba, who didn't last very long, either.

This type is by far the most common for this ursurper.

Style is OK, but
unfortunately, to my eye, it appears to be a copy taken from an original coin. It is not struck as evidenced by the complete absence or even a hint of a radial crack which is the result metal distress from being struck. (something like the cracking on the head of a well used cold chisel)

The texture of the metal surface on the neck and behind the neck suggests casting.

Google:
'Wildwinds Clodius Macer', for comparative genuine examples.

Shows signs of being cast, unfortunately. You might find a seam on the edge.

Thanks so much to you both for your input.

I've taken a close look at the edge, there doesn't appear to be any sign of a casting seam, though no doubt it may well still be cast anyway.

Having looked through Wildwinds as Sel_66 suggests, I also note that there do not appear to be any other examples with just 6 oars as this piece has, perhaps there is a 6 oar type recorded in RIC though if there is I can see no pictures of any.

Jeff;

If the coin was real, having 6 ores would be quite unique as you now know from looking. But those are some pretty modern looking flags, and you just don't see flags like that. So it might be a modern fantasy piece not made to look like any actual ancient coin exactly. (If someone has examples of flags like this please forgive my assumption folks.)

IMHO If it's not an obvious fake, a coin of that value should at least be checked out in hand by an expert to be 100%

Louisvillekyshop - I do agree, having looked at quite a few of these now, the details such as the flags don't look great - I'm leaning towards a well made modern fantasy piece.

As you say though travelcoin, given the potential value it's worth having it looked at properly. I'm selling a number of lots at DNW in London soon anyway so perhaps i'll ask them to have a quick look.

Thanks to all for your input.

For some reason this coin is a favorite of the fake makers
Perhaps because for some unknown reason it has been offered (and sold !) by "reputable" auctioneers
I don't believe it is possible for anyone to be 100% sure of every coin
But wanting it to be "true" can lead anyone astray
If your collection is large enough it's bound to have a dud somewhere in the mix
I own a few I suspect as possible deceptions
I have avoided buying silver ancients for over 30 years
(excepting a few outrageous bargains !)
