On the obverse are two men looking in the opposite directions. On the reverse is an animal of some sort with text above. CON? The coin is about 23 mm in diameter and about 3 mm thick Any suggestions? The two obverse figures are Emperor Augustus and his best buddy and heir-presumptive, Agrippa. On the reverse is a crocodile, chained to a tree - symbolic of the defeat by Augustus over the forces of Mark Antony and Cleopatra of Egypt. To either side of the tree is the name of the Roman colony that issued the coin: COL NEM, Colony of Nemausus, better known today as the city of Nimes, in the south of France. This type is just about the only coinage ever issued by this colony. Check out the Wildwinds page for Nemausus.
