Could it get any more fake than this? I suppose if it were a "coin" crayoned on a circle of cardboard, that would be more telling. A fellow collector pointed this out on ebay Australia Sadly, this coin realized AU $152.50, and conveniently with "User ID kept private". Darn! If people are still being fooled by poor pressure-cast copies, just wait until those die-struck fakes hit ebay en masse. As a service to collectors, I think our forum could use a brief workshop on detecting cast fakes at least. The die-struck fakes will be a tougher call. Edited by KurtS 08/10/2008 2:28 pm

Couple of points: Why do his coin auctions say the line "real NO."? Some with "NO" in red... Is he saying in the least noticeable way that the coins are not real? Also, if you know the coin isn't real, and the IDs are private, why not click "Report This Item" and let ebayknow? IMO it's the least you could do.

One could also go to his current auctions and report "listing violations" for ambiguously listing a copy or replica coin. ebay requires that copy/replica/counterfeit coins be listed clearly as such in the TITLE, as well as the description. Also, the coin must be marked as such, with the auction containing a clear pic of such markings. I report these all the time.

Draped bust? Maybe it's a hobo coin?

Quote: Is he saying in the least noticeable way that the coins are not real? Well, the auction starts out with "RARE, RARE, RARE", which I don't normally associate with disclosure of a pot-metal copy. Quote:Also, if you know the coin isn't real, and the IDs areprivate, why not click "Report This Item" and let ebay know? IMO it's the least you could do. I usually prefer to tell a buyer privately. Despite my suspicions, I can't exactly prove it to ebay. I've tried policing ebay in the past, with mixed results, so this post is meant to be simply amusing and informative.

It could. I have never even seen a Peace dollar (only photos of them) and even I know that this coin is so wrong.. Well, to the point. As I do not have a lot of experience, I want to make a set of photos of fakes for easy reference. The photos are readily available at Polish auction site. One thing remains - how do I get a gallery? I mean a similar one to what Kitty has? (I want it online, for some reasons it might be more useful to me this way. Also, maybe some other beginners might benefit someday).

DL20K, to get a gallery simply post in the last forum here at CCF (Support forum), and ask for one. You've gotten all the required posts and time needed for one, now you've only got to let the Moderators know to set one up for you.
Or you can also go to Omnicoin.com. They do galleries for coin collections, but it isn't as nice as the ones they give you here. The maximum size of picture is much smaller.

DL, if you're making a gallery of fakes, feel free to add this one. :) If I can recognise a coin right off that it's a fake, then it's a bad fake. This ... object came to me in a bulk lot. I suppose I didn't pay anything for it, since there were lots of really nice coins in the bag with it. It's obviously a sand-cast, and the weight is so light you can tell by holding it. I don't like holding it though, as I'm pretty certain there is a high content of lead in the metal. It makes a really good pencil!

Tracy, if it didn't cost $, I'd suggest sending that to PCGS...just for kicks. A "bodybag" would be the perfect complement.

40+ different fake dollars already found on Polish auctions for sale at the moment. Some are too obvious, some actually were labelled as copies. Included the one at the beginning of this thread. First, I will check all the auctions then go on to add others, like the one above. Thanks for your personal contribution, Kitty! My question - is this (below) supposed to imitate a pattern Trade dollar (I have no idea about patterns, but surely someone will recognize it)? I will probably have some questions later, so please don't disregard them.

OK thank you, request posted. Hopefully someone will notice it, not like the question above.

Pawel, I know that I have never seen a pattern like that for any US Trade dollars. Ever. I wish I had, I kind of like it! But someone else might have more knowledge on the topic.

Gads, I know I've seen that before. Probably on ebay. Yeah, looks acceptable to me in my blissful ignorance.
