Looks to me just like environmental damage from circulation: the coin may have spent some time buried or in the cupholder of someone's car. You see quite a few British 1p and 2p coins with very similar toning.

I also have a dark colored 1981 penny is it the same ? Environmental ? Also has Close AM on reverse . Is it worth hanging onto ? I was told copper doesn't turn black
