It is probably a good thing you aren't telling people about your collecting. This is a hobby that can lead to a valuable collection. The more people who know you have valuable coins, the more potential for the wrong person to find out. Then your valuable collection will be someone else's pawn shop sale.
As you are finding out, there are plenty of people here who want to hear all about your acquisitions, experiences, thoughts and questions on the topic. And no one here will judge you.

This is what I say and fill in the blanks...You spend XX(money) on (whatever they collect or do) and you never see me complain, now I would love some respect for something that I love doing.
or lay on the well bragging lol
like
Mom- "YOU SPENT HOW MUCH ON 1 OUNCE OF SILVER" Rick- "It was a 2006 W mintmark SIlver Eagle, I got 2 MS70 for 129.99" Mom- "130 dollars for 20 bucks of silver, way to waste your money"
2 years later
Rick- "Hey mom remember you said these 2 coins were a waste of money, Pulls up NGC" Rick- "Please read that for me" Mom- "HOLY **** 400 bucks for those, how many do you have" Rick- "2, so please let me do my thing" Mom- No response
LOL

I think the biggest problem with my parents is that they don't seem to make the connection that even though it is only a $1, $5 coin, whatever, that it still has value beyond just the denomination price. So when I spent $50 on a Morgan, all they think about is that I just spent 50 times face value for a coin. In their eyes it's a monumental waste of money.

BiggFredd says: Quote: Something that's amazed me over the years is how little tolerance even collectors have for other collectors. Boy, I must be intolerant of myself: Over the years I collect antique pottery, stamps, coins, plates.... Gee the list goes on. I think all collections are fantastic All are related to history - of which we should never overlook

The bulk of "history" will be preserved by the common man. Yeah, people are weird when they don't look at the "reality" of their comments that are criticizing. "You're stupid for spending $125.00 for a Silver Dollar!"...... Then I say... "how much did ya spend on music cd's, beer, movie rentals, Sony Playstation one, two, or three games, ciggerettes, and junk food last month" ? $185.00 ?....more ?..... "what's the re-sale value of a digested snickers bar" ?..... the re-sale value of a ciggerette butt ?..... aluminum will recycle, but did ya ?......how's the return on all of "your" investments ?......in 40 years, what's that stuff going to be worth that "you" bought, versus the stuff "I" bought ?...hmmmmm?

My wife is actually the one who told me to start collecting again. Don't have to justify but just keep to it at reasonable amount.

Quote: The one I use on my friends that smoke is - "You spend 5 dollars a day on a pack of cigarettes that you get absolutely nothing to show for except bad lungs. So thats 35 dollars a week. I would rather take that 35 dollars and buy something I will have for the rest of my life."
Hey, if they keep smoking they will have bad lungs that long, so better rethink that one son. I just try not to bring it up around people that won't understand. And if they ask I just have a couple replies: 1. Dude, this is worth about twice what I just paid for it. (reguardless of whether or not it actually is.) This usually gets some good "Really?" replies, then about 5 min of questions about collecting, or they tell me that they have all of their grandpa's coins in a shoe box somewhere, and I usually offer to take a look to tell them if they have anything exceptional. 2. If they persist, and try to give me gruff, I just say, "I know it doesn't make sense, but how many hobbies do?" After this, if they have a problem, I really could care less. I collect coins to make me happy, and I don't need to justify myself to anyone. If I want to buy truckloads of marbles and try and corner the international marble market, that is my priority. (granted a few people might think that I lost my marbles, and was just trying to find them, if I actually tried this) Another way is to show them something that you have found in circulation that is worth more then face, and tell them they should check all of their change.

Now that we have settled the issue of honour... back to the coins... My parents always appreciated that I spent my money on coins; they actually encouraged it. For a long time I only had to justify purchases to myself. Now I have a wife, but she appreciates my hobby as well. She is glad that I indulge in something worthwhile, not something wasteful like hanging out at the local bar every night after work.

My last passion was cars. In comparison, coins hold their value, far less maintenance, does not use any gas and better for the environment. Spending days in a garage and $$$ to keep a car in race shape got old. Someday, I will sell some of my collection to get a Ferrari though...

I feel that unless you drink like a Kennedy, hanging out at the bar would be a lot cheaper than a shrink! Quote: My last passion was cars. I am considering selling it to get something with four doors and family oriented, but I won't do that until I can get over the idea of getting a certain four-door with the letters EVO in the name! (I hope a car guy named 1sikevo will understand.)

I've got a 30' x 32' garage that is stuffed to the rafters with car and bike stuff... at least I know that if my coin collection ever reaches that point, it'll be time to sell and retire One of the things I've learned is that there's no point trying to share obsessions with people who couldn't care less... It's a total loss. I'm surprised that parents would be disdainful of coin collecting... I know a lot of parents that just wish their children would be more interested in things that have a potential to increase in value, don't require them to be out all night, don't make noise, and are unlikely to explode. And re-sale value of a used Snickers bar

All of you guys have really valid answers. My favorite is eagle-foots though and just to clarify, my parents don't hate the fact that I collect coins. they just don't understand why I spend so much on them. i guess its the classic teenage crisis of "No1 gets me " ha-ha aw well

I love my friends answer who is ignorant on the subject of Numismatics. For example, a 1927-S SLQ in G04. "How can you spend $45 for a quarter!" That is classic
