I was hoping to post photos today of a 6-step nickel that has a good strike at its steps but poor elsewhere, but I've not been able to find it. I know I have a few of them but I probably banished them to a tube somewhere because I don't like mushy strikes.
So for now this 1953-D will have to do. It's not a 6-stepper but in hand looks like it could make 5 steps. Meanwhile the rest of the coin shows late state die effects, mainly orange peel. Few dings means it will grade decently but I've always preferred strikes from earlier state dies than this, even if they have fewer steps.
