Many years ago during CRH I found one roll that was mostly lower-mintage D and S cents from the 1920s and 1930s, all VF to EF condition. No key dates were present, as if someone had saved those and dumped the rest. All had dark brown areas in feathery patterns. The dark brown does not come clean with acetone, making me think its staining of some type, but what type? Fire? Water damage? Anyone seen this sort of thing before?

Probably not worth the effort of conservation given the value.

How long did you have it in acetone? Perhaps give a LONG bath.

Acetone would have been less than a minute. I can see a longer bath might be worth the experiment, never tried it on any coin. Not a big loss if something goes wrong on this one.

Xylene might also be worth a shot if a minute in acetone didn't work
