I would like to know the different ways people get good magnified pictures that are acceptable for the experts to make judgments on the coins.

There are more than one way, here is mine. I use a point-n-shoot digital camera when possible. I also have two USB microscopes for the real close ups,but those are a challenge to use because of the lighting problems that are inherent to them.

I use my cell phone. It took me a few tries to find a phone that works. My original one I had when I started to collect did not have the proper hardware to focus. My next phone had a supposedly good camera but was not great at focusing close-up on small objects. Third phone works great, imo. It took me some practice however. There is no way for me to just hold it steady enough, so I put it on a platform of some kind to eliminate even the slightest shake.

I shoot at the highest resolution my camera will comfortably do.
That results on an image much bigger than screen size.
Then I crop/reduce the image to screen size (I've got Photoshop Elements).

The only problem with that procedure is LOTS of little marks that can't be seen with the unaided eye or even at 3x magnification show up.

Many programs out there for photography where you can crop and/or enlarge a photo. Photo shop is only one of them.

Any iPhone or other camera can easily be attached to an old camera tripod stand which enables one to incrementally focus in on desired areas.

An iPhone's iOS software, for example, allows a user to fix the focal length by tapping and keeping a finger on the screen until it signals that the auto focus has been disabled.

With this procedure the sometimes annoying auto-focusing is absent and the user can use the crank handle of the stand to move the camera up/down.

Also, one can buy a clip-on high mag. lens to most smartphones to take much better higher resolution shots compared to USB cameras. I stopped using my USB setup over two years ago and have been pleasantly surprised at the results for both regular and close-up shots.

I use my mobile (LG Stlyus 3) for many coins and my usb microscope for close ups of a single coin.
I still use MS Paint which is good enough for me.

The "$400 setup" described over in the photography section is flexible enough to allow use of normal enlarging/duplication lenses for normal full-coin shots, as well as microscope objectives for real macro shots.

My setup is more-or-less equivalent. With the canon T6s DSLR, the main lenses I use are:

- for large coins and whole slabs: Olympus 50mm f/2 macro

- for most coins: 75mm f/4 APO Rodagon D1x

- for 2x-4x closeups: Canon 35mm f/2.8 Macrophoto lens

- for 4x and above: 4X, 5X, and 10X Nikon and Mitutoyo microscope objectives
