I can't find any local coin dealers who know ancient coins. I bought a pocket watch chain and this coin was the fob. It is 28mm and 8 grams. I searched some coin archives, but don't see any that match.
Looks like an assarius (based on dimensions and weight) of Domitian - reverse is Minerva standing left with thunderbolt, shield and spear, a real classic Domitian reverse. The year is marked on the reverse, but has not survived the ages very well - I think I can read TR P COS VII, which would make it this one, minted in 81AD:
Domitian, Rome. AE As. AD 81. IMP CAES DIVI VESP F DOMITIAN AVG PM, Laureate head right TR P [COS VII DES VIII]? P P S-C, Minerva standing left, holding spear. RIC 78; Cohen 555; London 261-262; Paris 276-277.
Clearer pictures might be able to pin it down - also, the fields have a bit of chatter, which can be evidence of casting, so a good picture could clear that up.
RIC 78 is a Sestertius. This looks like a dupondius to me. Possibly RIC 82. I think I see a thunderbolt, spear and shield on the reverse. However, I cannot tell if it is real or not from that photo.
Yes it is a copper "As" Unfortunately the modern hole kinda takes a bite out of the bottom line here When it was drilled the coin probably cost no more than a dollar (or two !) Prices have gone up ! Ancient holes can sometimes be acceptable as being historical People had fond feelings for Augustus and sometimes wore him Domitian ....... not so much As it is now though this one might be more valuable as a fob Worth keeping more for the novelty
The picture of the obverse is out of focus but looks like a nice portrait with full legends to me. The reverse has issues but is identifiable... pity about the hole.
Some certainly have higher standards than me... But I think this is a good, collectible coin that I would be happy to own. Nice pick up!
