I bought an unopened 1980 $50 Canvas bag of Lincoln cents. This is the first time I've opened a mint bag to search and I was surprised that the condition of these cents was so good. I've only looked at maybe 50 coins so far, but they show very little bag damage. Cents I've never searched one of these mint bags before (see what I did there?) I wanted to see if anyone might have some advise for me. I included a picture of the bag. I think they are from the West Point mint, so I'm not really looking for the popular 1980 p DDO 1, but I'm still excited to look through my first mint bag. Thanks Mitch Edited by truman1404 03/08/2019 3:41 pm

I have not bought a mint bag. How is it sealed? Where did you get it? Please post your finds.

Make sure you save the bag . They are collectible . The 1980-P cents were not minted in West Point , they were minted in Philly ,go ahead and search for errors . Tube up the rest ( assuming they are all BU )and sell them on the bay . keep all the best MS coins in tubes for yourself .

Hopefully you will find some goodies. I bought this bag 10 years ago or so, and haven't taken the time to go through it.

I think they were minted at West Point but they didn't have a mintmark, so people just assumed they were Philly cents. That's what I've read, but I could be mistaken.

The bags are almost as interesting looking as the coins inside them.

West Point struck cents from 1975 to 1986. San Francisco did from 1978 to 1983. Neither used mint marks.

Two weeks ago I thought the same thing as you T-BOP. Here is an example of the condition of most of the coins I've seen so far. I thought this one had some doubling on the steps leading up to the monument and that's why I stopped to take the photo, but after looking closer at it, it looks more like a hit than doubling. Thanks for the advise. Mitch

I have searched thousands of 1980's over the years, including looking at dealers/shows/bank boxes & bags/change/BU rolls. This is best I've been able to find so you have a good reference point. The important key things: luster (bright, shiny, highly reflective), clean fields (no distractions/marks), sharp devices (early die state), strong strike (especially on the shoulder area and STATES OF & E PLUR on the reverse).
