Hello,

I found this coin in a world-lot.

What do you think about the hole?
It is only punched to about half of the coin.
What grade and value would you expect?

By the way, that is an 1884. Hard date, ashame it is holed, should still bring a few bucks

It looks to have been drilled out since there's no sign of damage on the reverse. That is odd.

I must agree with Patrick, it def looks drilled. Still that is a much better date coin in the series and even damaged like that would be worth at least VG money

Horrible pun intended here but you may get $20 or more for it as a decent "hole filler".

I'm not seeing $20...

It does have good details, but that one big glaring ugly spot is enough that I think it's going to drop it down quite a bit... I know if I had the choice of picking that one or an undamaged AG, I'd go with the AG.

Pretty good date. Were you to offer it to me for $5 I wouldn't buy... $2 and I might... So for me the value would probably be somewhere in between those 2

Call it 20, 30 , 40 , 60 for the grades g through vf. I probably misspoke though saying you could get VG money. Probably $20 is about right, or g-4 money in that case. Honestly its a nice coin for the damage and I think its nicer than an AG. I personally own two lib nickels both XF details 1884,1888 that have corrosion issues. They were purchased for a song, but I wouldn't trade them for scads of AGs

The "hole" ruins it and de-values it completely, no matter what the date and mint mark for some......others would take it if it was a key date and the "holed coin" would fill a "hole" in an album.
IMHO......it's what you'll accept and keep that matters.
If it works out that you didn't pay much for it and it came with those other coins in a grouping.......then no big deal.
The "value" ......well......if that was an 1885....I'd still be jumping up and down....but the '84.....I personally wouldn't pay much for a "holed" common date coin.......I don't own any, nor do I want any.
It's only a matter of opinion on this coins value.......
