A couple years ago some of the others that used to be captured blocked their results which was likely so you have to go to their webpage to see them and might bid while you're there.

I don't think that's a good strategy, as most people if they are like me are too lazy to bother to go to the other sites, especially if there is sufficient data from the sites that allow the prices to be captured. Also, I think allowing prices to be captured helps legitimize the other auction sites. Must have gone to a different business school that I did.

I'm just speculating on their reasoning and what may have been the motivation and could be completely off base. That said it has been confirmed from at least one of them that they were the ones who made the decision not to have the prices be captured. Several others seemed to have made the same choice as the amount of places captured dropped a couple years ago and obviously PCGS isn't going to search all the sites and enter them by hand.

The other disclaimer for it would be that the ebay ones are dependent on how the seller lists the item so if they make a mistake it could get missed. Heritage, Legend, and Stacks are the most reliable for getting captured last I saw, but even with those I believe the Legend prices only cover their auctions not their sales

Hmmm. OK, probably more going on that we know. Seems to me if PCGS really wanted, they could just data scrape/parse the data since it is on a public site. That is soooo easy to do without much needed, but no point to 2nd guess. Having said that, an independent site could probably pull in all the auction data that is out there and have a more complete list if they so wanted to pursue such a thing. OP, sorry to get your thread off track.

If there ever was going to be a more comprehensive site that did force capture the data from places I would think it would need to be independent. There's obviously a mutually beneficial relationship with the TPGs and an auction house as they both increase the demand for the others services so aside from cost I would think that there wouldn't be much effort to scrap the price history if they didn't want it.

It certainly was a lot quicker and more useful when more places were being captured
