Some ancient coin collectors like Biblical coins, coins mentioned in the Bible or rulers and cities in the Bible. David Hendin's books are great for this area. A long time dealer once told me there are about ten ancient coins that have always been very popular, including the inexpensive Jewish bronze widow's mite, the Shekel of Tyre silver tetradrachm thought to be the thirty pieces of silver Judas was paid to betray Jesus, the Tiberius silver denarius thought to be the tribute (tax) coin that Jesus talked about, a Julius Caesar silver denarius, the Athens silver tetradrachms, etc. All of these can be found for under $500, some will be lower grade. Just be sure to buy from a well known trusted seller so you don't get a fake.

Here's pics of my Tiberius denarius and Athens tetradrachm.

After pondering over it for some time, I have decided to hold off until I have time to read up a bit. I will check out ancients for sale and if I see a coin I particularly like, then I will ask for the forums opinion. I kind of thought there might be a defining coin or coins, but it seems that ancients are so vast and varied. Thank you all for the insight and suggestions!

Yes they are varied
A tetradrachm of Alexander the Great (lifetime issue) dates from the 320's BC while a coin of Constantine the Great dates to (approx) AD 320's
That's 650 years !
Or the same time frame as the "Black Death" bubonic plague of the 1350's to the present time
A lotta stuff happens in between !
