This past week I was fortunate enough to be able to be part of bringing a new error variety to light regarding the 1943-S Steel Lincoln Cent. I purchased this coin on ebay on 3/12. I could clearly see the die crack in the seller's photos. Once I shared it on CT, Ray (rmpsrpms) informed me that it was, in fact, a die break with a Retained Cud, which made it even more interesting.

Ray said that the anomaly "almost" matched error ID #25 (RCD-1c-1943S-25) on the coins-on-cuds.com reference site. It still had differences though, namely the extra crack in the middle of the triangle break. So I submitted high res images to JC Stevens, owner of the site. The next day, after reviewing the coin, he assigned it to a new classification: RCD-1c-1943S-31- a new discovery!

Here it is. It's a lustrous, silvery GEM. I love these "silver pennies."

I can't believe the seller didn't notice it! How? It was so visible and obvious. Oh well. You got a great deal for it.

We actually had e-mail correspondence over the "crack." To him it wasn't a big deal because he sees these kinds of things all the time on steelies. So this is why he didn't even bother to mention this detail in the listing. But I picked up on it right away. I thought it was cool to have such a prominent error on a bright, lustrous MS coin. This coin has been well cared for since 1943! I appreciate all the comments, guys. I LOVE this hobby!
