So I was at Hobby Lobby today browsing the 2019 RedBook (spiral bound). Just at random I was looking at the penny section. I thought it weird that they list PF 65 but not anything higher like PF 69 or 70. Is there a reason for this?

Do they normally? All the editions I've ever owned only go up to 65, I guess because 69/70 is too rare and fluctuates a lot with the fad of the day?

Plus, I'm sure the coin dealers lobby to prevent that, so you don't have people lined out the door with OBWs of cents, expecting every one of them to be worth $250

The Red Book is just a general (high) retail guide for the everyday collector. Not the place to look for values on esoteric high grade coins.

There are many (most?) RedBook listings for coins from the 1800s and early1900s that go no higher than MS63 even though higher graded coins are not hard to find. I have assumed that scarcity and price volatility in the higher grades makes it infeasible to quote a price intended to be more or less reliable for an entire year. Finn235's fad of the day observation is well taken.

Same reason they did not show VF-30, EF-42, AU-51, etc. If they listed every possibly grade for every coin, you would have a book as big as a house. Just not enough room.

RedBook has one paragraph in grading that describes there are higher grades above MS65 or PF65.

I don't recall seeing slabbed proofs labeled PF 65 to PF 68. I could be wrong though.

Agree, for proofs 69 or 70 are not rare esoteric high grades. Quite common to find these in many proof sets.

I don't using pricing books much but it's nice to have an easy point of reference. If I see a PF 69 or PF 70 on ebay it would be nice to have an idea what the value is because I think many are overpriced on ebay.
