A friend showed me a Buffalo nickel she had recently taken in at the store in which she works.

1930 something, average condition. But with reeding on the edge.

Does this mean counterfeit, or just someone experimenting?

Rest in Peace

Most likely experimenting. Remember they did this to racketeer nickels. Maybe someone's planning to make reissues of them.

If it is a 1937 P( no mint mark) It is most likely a Novelty item produced by Philadelphia coin dealer Ira Reed. He had reportedly made 104 sets(nickel & cent)with a reeded edge as a play on words with his name. These coins were either given away or sold at the 1941 convention of the ANA. I have no idea if they would be worth anything.

I have seen a couple of the Ira Reed sets sell for a few hundred each.
