Hi folks,
I found a 1939 Jefferson nickel in pocket change and it appears to have a phantom "S" after IGWT. Could this really be a misplaced mint mark that I am seeing? Opinions, please.

Thanks,
Chris

Just damage that looks somewhat like an S. PMD
It would be impossible for that to happen during the striking of the coin.
