Sometimes I buy a coin because it is attractive. this coin is a case in point. It also happens to be a scarce denarius of Domitian. For me the portrait sold it. I also love the toning. DOMITIAN, (A.D. 81-96), silver denarius, Rome mint, issued A.D. 86, Second Issue (3.47 g), Obv. laureate head of Domitian to right, around IMP CAES DOMIT AVG GERM P M TR P V, Rev. around IMP XII COS XII CENS P P P, Minerva standing to right, fighting, holding javelin and shield, (RIC 435, RSC 201b BMC 93). Attractive blue and gold patina, extremely fine. Ex Dr V.J.A. Flynn Collection. With old dealer's ticket. Noble Numismatics Auction 120 Lot 3217 April 4, 2019.

Superior die engraving, great strike, limited wear, good centering, attractive toning...There's a lot to like here!

I have a copy of the auction catalog. 4534 lots, with a total estimate value of around AU$ 3.5 million. I attended on one of the viewing days.
orfew: You have described the Domitian denarius almost exactly as described in the auction catalog. That made it easy to find!
Lot 3217 had an estimate of AU$180. (US$128) There were a considerable number of other lots of ancient coins, from the Dr V.J.A. Flyn Collection. Quite an attractive coin, evenly and fully struck up, with complete legends, (conservatively) graded in the catalog at EF.
The reason for attending a view day is because on that day, I bought another ancient coin over the counter.
I have known the owner of the business for over 40 years. On the day I bought my coin over the counter, Jim Noble gave me a spare copy of the sale catalog, so I then proceeded to the viewing. I did submit a bid on lot 2989 (Celtic Central Europe tetradrachm) for AU$150, but I missed out.

Indeed a beautiful coin. I agree with Bob's comments.

@Sel_69I
Thank you very much for the extra information concerning my coin. I also thought the grading appeared quite conservative at EF. I will know for sure when I see it in hand. I won it for my only bid of AUD 150, which I thought was a steal at that price.
Thanks to your message I have sent an email to the company asking if a copy of the auction catalogue would be available for purchase. I really like having the auction catalogues for my coins. It is really neat to see a coin of mine published.
Sorry you missed out on your target in the auction.
