I was just wondering if anyone knows what would do this to a worn penny?

I know that it isn't worth anything. I just think it looks cool and I am very curious as to why it would turn black like this. I would love to know your thoughts on it. Thanks!

The penny is smooth too.

To CCF! Just a damaged coin with Post Strike Damage ( PSD) unfortunately. The damage happened after it left the U.S. Mint.

I could only guess but looks like some sort of mild corrosive to break down the copper on the high points exposing the zinc and turning it black.

Looks like the copper plating has been buffed off exposing the zinc core
which has turned black. The zinc will eventually start to rot

I figured that the copper playing had been rubbed down to expose the zinc. I am just curious about what would cause zinc to turn black. I am thinking it is some sort of chemical reaction.

Thanks for your thoughts on it!
