i dont have a coin shop near me so my only source for coins are these forums and ebay I have narrowed my coin and paper money buying down to a few very good sellers. my question is the guy I buy coins from his prices are a little high not alot but still high never the less. would you be willing to pay a couple of dollars more than you should for coins knowing that there wont be any surprises or would you still try to find a different seller. I tend to want to stay with this seller I'm just wondering what everyone else would do. Edited by Forum Mom to move from Main Coin Forum to Auction Forum

You tend to get what you pay for.

if there were no surprises then I would stick with them if I seem to agree with their grading and everything else. I also want to add, there are allot of good sellers on ebay along with allot of bad ones, you have to choose for yourself who you like to deal with on ebay just as you would at a B&M store

I can relate to what scott is saying. I have three dealers I do business with by mail. They have always come through with their coins. While one may be a few dollars higher than what I could pay elsewhere, it is worth the peace of mind to deal with him.
I have tried to branch out, and am now in the process of trying a new (to me) dealer. Will have to wait and see.

Question for you- does this seller list the coins in an ebay store with BIN prices or does he do auctions? If he has an auction format, then he personally has no control over the final price but the fact that the prices are consistently high is telling. Sellers who frequently get legitimately high prices for auctions tend to be very good sellers with detailed photos, excellent descriptions, and a return policy. The forum owner Bobby sells on ebay and from what I have seen, always has great final values on his auctions and that has alot to do with the fact that he is one of the best and most honest sellers around. Buyers tend to bid higher on an auction when they are sure they will be getting quality coins with no hassle.

I am also trying to pare down ebay sellers to find the good ones. One method I use is to send them a question through email. Sometimes the way the response is worded sheds some light on whether or not they are sellers interested in promoting the hobby or just regular shmoes trying to make a fast buck.

If someone works hard to make me happy, then I actually feel obliged to give them some extra money. Think of the increased price as a tip and you will feel better about it!

That's my area of expertise. Many times, I'm surprised at the final prices of our auctions. We also have quite a few return customers. I like to think that we are one of the "good guys" on ebay. Scott, my advice to you is to stick with a seller or dealer that you trust. You may find a few good deals with new sellers, but a consistently honest dealer is a real treasure.
