Interesting that when you look at these things from above they look kinda dull and brown, but the surface is actually very polished-looking and in this case mostly red when viewed at an angle.

Thanks folks! And yes E & V I bought this one. I've only ever found three or four of these as they are pretty easy to spot and rarely floating around. But for this one I got it at auction on ebay for a whopping $8.50 with free shipping. I don't pay a lot for these, as they are really common, but when they get below ten bucks that's pretty cheap. And not really any kind of cherrypick or anything, it was correctly labeled as an "error" coin although I don't think the seller knew exact what kind of error it was as there was no mention of struck through or anything.

The other three of these I bought this week I got from a coin dealer who knows perfectly well what they are but doesn't charge a fortune for them. I bought one MDS without brockage but still with fully obscure date plus the two LDS 1980's that I posted for $11.50 total. So less than $20 for four struck through capped die coins. Hard to beat that!

Those are really cool to look at even though I have yet to find one in the wild.
