Your conclusion makes more sense to me.
Because had it been acid, parts of the penny would have shown signs of pealing and uneven pigmentation.

Probably a Dryer Coin (OP's coin). Whatever caused it, it definitely did NOT happen at the U.S. Mint, just doesn't work that way. It's Post Strike Damage ( PSD). That's the final verdict.
