Safe, inexpensive.
Just make sure you flatten down the staples so they don't scratch the next coin below.

Actually many people do use those all the time. Some people use plastic sheets that hold 20 of those and keep them in a 3 ringed binder. and

Cardboard 2x2's are fine. They use Mylar plastic windows, which are harmless for coins. For long term storage of these, you are far better off with non PVC plastic 20 pocket album pages.
With ordinary clear soft PVC album pages, the softening plasticiser for the PVC gasses out over a long period of time, and can spoil the coins in the 2x2's.

Most all of my coins are in cardboard 2x2's . No problems if using a flat clinch staple gun . Would never use anything else .

Hi! I would like to add that you should probably check your cardboard 2x2s every couple years and change them and/or the staples if they are aging poorly.
I've seen some staples go rusty and stain a coin when not paying attention to it before and you'd want to avoid that happening. just a good idea in general, like a spring cleaning and check to make sure all is well and if not, change them to new ones.

Hi all, thanks for your help and warm welcome!
On a side note, I currently use self-adhesive 2x2 so I assume they are also safe?
I have a few of my coin holders already in plastic sheets, however I am a bit wary that they may contain PVC/vinyl. Is there any sure way to check or would I be safer just buying new ones?

I find the 2x2's can more easily fall out of the album, when non PVC album pages are used.
To counter this problem, I use a curved clinch stapler. The curves on the staples provide a slight 'grab' to the inside of the album pockets, as well as providing some extra thickness to the 2x2's.
